Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2004.
National Center for Education Statistics publication # 2005002, (2004)
A joint effort by the Bureau
of Justice Statistics and National Center for Education Statistics, this
annual report examines crime occurring in school as well as on the way
to and from school. It provides the most current detailed statistical
information to inform the Nation on the nature of crime in schools. This
report presents data on crime at school from the perspectives of
students, teachers, principals, and the general population from an array
of sources--the National Crime Victimization Survey (1992-2002), the
School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey
(1995, 1999, 2001, and 2003), the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (1993,
1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003), the School Survey on Crime and Safety
(2000) and the School and Staffing Survey (1993-94 and 1999-2000). Data
on crime away from school are also presented to place school crime in
the context of crime in the larger society.

Crime and Safety in America's Public Schools: Selected
Findings from the School Survey on Crime and Safety.
National Center for Education Statistics publication # 2004370, (2004).
This brief report presents analysis of the 2000 School Survey on Crime
and Safety (SSOCS). SSOCS is a nationally representative sample of
public elementary and secondary schools. Principals were asked about the
amount of crime and violence, disorder, disciplinary actions, violence
prevention programs, teacher and parent involvement in prevention
efforts, crime and safety practice, crisis management plans, and
barriers to school safety. While the SSOCS collects a wide variety of
information, this report provides national estimates on the major topics
covered in SSOCS.
